What drives people to succeed or to even try, and more especially, to keep trying when success appears remote?

Pointing to the One who made, saved, and sustains

I think it varies for different people. Some are driven to succeed to prove others wrong, to make others proud, to gain acceptance via performance, etc. Some dedicate everything they do the Jesus and work hard not to please men but to please Him.
I am trying to be in the second category but am falling short.
