“Praise the Lord!
I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart,
In the company of the upright and in the assembly.
Great are the works of the Lord;
They are studied by all who delight in them.
Splendid and majestic is His work,
And His righteousness endures forever.
He has made His wonders to be remembered;
The Lord is gracious and compassionate.” Psalm 111:1-4

The giving of thanks, or thanksgiving, is the praise to God for who He is and what He has done. It is appropriate to be done in all circumstances, but particularly “in the company of the upright”, the body of believers, because of the encouraging fellowship of agreement and amen. God’s works proceed out of who He is, so that thanking Him in praise for what He has done is commensurate with praising Him for who He is. His works are the tangible manifestations of His attributes. He is great and we see in all around us and within us who believe.
